Echo Summit, CA (February 17, 2026) – The California Highway Patrol reports that three young men sustained serious injuries Monday afternoon when a vehicle hit them as they were installing tire chains on US 50 at Echo Summit. The incident took place on Monday, February 16, at around 4:53:45 p.m. Just east of Johnson Pass Road, CHP officials said a Kia sedan had pulled into a highway turnout while occupants tried to adjust a chain on the left front tire. Two onlookers paused to lend a hand. While all three men were working near the left front of the vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado heading west on US 50 near Johnson Pass lost control on the snow-covered road. The Silverado veered into the eastbound lanes and crashed into the Kia, hitting the three pedestrians. Officials stated that one pedestrian was hurled about 40 feet and ended up on the right shoulder behind the Kia. The other two were pulled by the Chevrolet before being released by passersby and Caltrans workers. The three pedestrians, aged 21 to 23 and from the Bay Area, suffered major injuries and were taken to Barton Memorial Hospital for treatment. The two occupants of the Chevrolet, aged 17 and 21 and from Sacramento, reported chest pain and sustained minor injuries.
