Capitola, CA (March 10, 2026) – A person was killed in a structure fire that occurred Monday night, March 9, at an apartment complex on Monterey Avenue in Capitola. Emergency responders were sent to 204 Monterey Avenue following reports of flames at the multi-story building. Responders discovered flames impacting the first and second floors of the apartment building, with the fire spreading to an adjacent two-story commercial structure. While searching the building, crews found one individual inside. The victim was transported to a hospital but ultimately succumbed to their injuries. Officials have not disclosed the individual’s identity. A second person at the scene was assessed but did not need hospital transport. One firefighter sustained a minor injury during the firefighting efforts. The blaze was brought under control in roughly one hour, but crews stayed on scene overnight to watch for any possible re-ignition. Authorities are still reviewing the incident. We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim and hope for a quick recovery for those injured. How Do Structure Fires Affect Mixed-Use Properties? Multiple access points near Monterey Avenue can hinder emergency responses. In Capitola, when fires break out, responders typically prioritize containing the flames and stopping their spread to adjacent structures. Buildings that integrate residential units with adjacent commercial spaces can enable fire and smoke to travel between interconnected areas.
