Multi-vehicle crashes frequently occur in heavy traffic, where one abrupt stop or collision sets off a chain reaction. When cars travel closely together, drivers might lack sufficient time or distance to avoid the vehicle ahead. The impact from the initial collision can propel vehicles into adjacent lanes or into other cars. It can disperse damage over a broad region, resulting in road closures as crews clear away debris. Investigators typically examine traffic patterns, signal timings, and the post-crash positions of all vehicles.
