This piece is a follow-up to a story we reported on previously. The original report can be read here. Fresno, CA (January 14, 2026) – Melissa Culver was one of multiple individuals hurt in a large pileup that killed one person on Sunday morning, January 11, along southbound Highway 99 in Fresno. The crash pileup took place at about 9:15 a.m. The California Highway Patrol reports the incident occurred between Cedar and North Avenues. Melissa and her husband were traveling in a blue Hyundai when they got caught in the 17-vehicle chain-reaction crash. Investigators state that thick fog reduced visibility, leading vehicles to brake abruptly and get rear-ended by faster-following ones. In the crash aftermath, a passenger emerged from one vehicle post-collision and was fatally hit by approaching traffic. The victim was declared dead at the scene and subsequently identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as 61-year-old Gustavo Villanueva Vargas from Fresno. Melissa Culver suffered bruises on her chest and forearms, and her husband sustained multiple cuts along with further bruising. Several other people, including minors, were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries varying from minor to serious. A portion of Highway 99 was briefly shut down while officials handled the disorderly situation and launched their probe. CHP authorities verified that poor visibility due to fog played a major role in the incident, which is still being investigated. We offer our heartfelt condolences to Gustavo Vargas’s family and hope for a complete and swift recovery for all the injured, including Melissa Culver and her husband.
