(Los Angeles, CA) Early Sunday morning on December 21, a man died in a crash on the Golden State Freeway in the Arleta neighborhood, involving a big rig and a sedan. CHP officers arrived at the scene around 3:43 a.m. to the northbound I-5 freeway just south of the Osborne Street offramp. First responders discovered one man dead at the scene, but it was still unclear which vehicle he had been in. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner subsequently identified him as 25-year-old Donovan Chapman. Authorities shut down northbound lanes for multiple hours amid the investigation and cleanup. Overview of the Golden State Freeway Accident. When a collision involves a large commercial vehicle and a passenger car, investigators typically start with the Basic Speed Law. This rule mandates that drivers operate at speeds appropriate for the road and traffic conditions. On a busy route like the 5 Freeway, assessing if any driver was traveling too fast for early-morning visibility or traffic is key to figuring out the cause of the Golden State Freeway crash. Since lane position and maneuvers are critical in multi-vehicle freeway collisions, analysts might also use the Lane Usage and Safe Movement Law.
