(San Diego, CA) On Saturday morning, January 25, two women sustained serious injuries when a driver allegedly intentionally hit them as they crossed the street in a Fourth Avenue crash. The San Diego Police Department reported that an officer on routine patrol observed the incident around 8 a.m. The crash occurred in the 500 block of Fourth Avenue, close to Island Avenue. According to police, a four-door Kia Optima quickly approached two women crossing the street and struck both pedestrians. The vehicle then tried to turn eastbound onto Island Avenue. The officer promptly conducted a traffic stop, and the vehicle pulled over shortly afterward near Fifth Avenue. Officers identified the driver as Annabel Fernandez. According to police, she got out of the vehicle and was taken into custody at the scene. As part of the initial investigation, officers assessed her for potential driving under the influence. SDPD Officer David O’Brien stated that investigators subsequently discovered the driver had engaged in a physical altercation with the two pedestrians prior to the collision. According to police, the driver fled the scene, waited in her car, and then sped toward the women as they were crossing the street. Paramedics took both injured pedestrians to hospitals, where they were treated for serious injuries. Authorities withheld the names and ages of the police.
