Castaic, CA (March 3, 2026) – A tractor-trailer struck and killed a 22-year-old man’s vehicle on the 5 Freeway in Castaic Friday night before fleeing the scene. The victim, identified by family as Alejandro Covarrubias, had pulled over on the shoulder to fix a flat tire when the crash happened shortly after 11 p.m. Covarrubias had pulled over to fix a flat tire on the rear driver’s side when the big rig crashed into his vehicle. He didn’t survive the crash. His girlfriend was riding in the passenger seat and saw the crash happen. Investigators are trying to identify the truck involved. Officials observed that the trailer possibly bore Amazon markings, although no confirmation was available at the time of the report. The incident is under investigation as a hit-and-run. Covarrubias’ sister, Ana Iscoa, spoke publicly about her brother’s death. He was aged 22.
