Shafter, CA (March 6, 2026) – A man died early Friday, March 6, when his vehicle struck a Freightliner on Highway 43 near Orange Street outside Shafter in Kern County. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly before 5 a.m. On the southbound lanes of Highway 43 north of Orange Street, reports indicate a Toyota driver heading southbound approached a slower-moving Freightliner hauling double trailers ahead. The Freightliner, operated by a 42-year-old man from Shafter, was traveling at 15 to 20 mph when the Toyota couldn’t brake in time and collided with the truck’s rear. The collision pinned the Toyota driver inside the car. Emergency responders declared the driver deceased at the scene. Officials have yet to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The matter is still being investigated by authorities. We extend our sympathies to the victim’s family… Why Rear-End Crashes Involving Big Trucks Are Particularly Hazardous. Collisions between passenger cars and large trucks frequently lead to serious consequences owing to the substantial disparity in their size and weight. When a smaller vehicle collides with the rear of a commercial truck, the car’s front end often absorbs the majority of the impact. Differences in visibility and speed can also play a role in these accidents. Large trucks often travel at reduced speeds, particularly when carrying heavy loads or towing multiple trailers.
