Riverside, CA (January 14, 2026) – The California Highway Patrol reports a deadly crash early Wednesday morning on southbound Interstate 215 near Central Avenue in Riverside, caused by a wrong-way driver. CHP dispatch logs indicate the incident started around 12:19 a.m. after multiple reports arrived of a vehicle heading northbound in the southbound lanes. Witnesses saw the wrong-way vehicle traveling at 30–40 mph across multiple lanes. This occurred at approximately 12:25 a.m. The wrong-way vehicle reportedly collided with another car near Central Avenue. Firefighters and paramedics among the emergency responders arrived in minutes and verified that the crash had killed at least one person. The vehicle suffered extensive damage, prompting responders to fully close all southbound lanes of I-215 in order to secure the area and start the investigation and cleanup. The deceased person’s identity remains unreleased until next of kin are notified. The cause of the crash, including any role played by impairment or other factors, is still under investigation.
