(Los Angeles, CA) A man died Sunday night, February 15, after an SUV struck him in a crosswalk and fled the scene in a crash on south Western Avenue. Los Angeles Police Department officers responded around 9:30 p.m. to South Western Avenue and West 82nd Street in response to reports of a pedestrian collision. Upon arrival, officers learned that the driver, traveling northbound on Western Avenue, had struck a man crossing westbound in a marked crosswalk at West 82nd Street. The victim was subsequently identified as 50-year-old Javier Tamayo from Los Angeles. Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived and declared Tamayo dead at the scene. Officials provided no further information regarding the vehicle’s speed or the status of the traffic signal during the crash. The information was still under investigation as detectives continued to examine the evidence. Police described the suspect vehicle as a tan GMC SUV featuring LED lights along the side running boards. Investigators reported that the SUV was last spotted heading east on 81st Street from Western Avenue. The driver failed to stop and provide aid, fleeing the scene before police arrived. The LAPD South Traffic Division took over the investigation.
