Bonita, CA (April 12, 2026) – One person died Saturday afternoon, April 11, following a fiery collision with a tow truck on the South Bay (54) Freeway in Bonita, east of National City. The incident occurred around 3:34 p.m. On eastbound SR-54, just west of the South Bay (125) Expressway. Emergency responders arrived after reports of a car fire sparked by a freeway crash. The California Highway Patrol said a tow truck had pulled over on the right shoulder to assist a disabled vehicle when another car rear-ended it. The collision caused the car to catch fire, and the vehicle being loaded onto the tow truck ignited as well. At least one person was declared dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not been disclosed yet. Officials are still probing the reason behind the accident, with further information to be shared once it’s known. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family of the victim. Why High-Speed Collisions with Tow Trucks on Freeways Turn Deadly. Disabled vehicle crashes and towing operations on freeways pose particular dangers because of their nearness to passing traffic. Even short stops on the shoulder pose risks if oncoming drivers don’t slow down. When a vehicle hits a tow truck, the impact force can spark fires, particularly if the fuel system is compromised.
