Avalon, CA (April 12, 2026) – A small plane crash in a remote area near Avalon on Catalina Island claimed the lives of two people. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on April 9, a Thursday. Emergency services rushed to the island’s south side following reports of a crashed plane in a rough ravine south of the botanical gardens. The victims were named as 51-year-old Daniel Sarner and 54-year-old Robert Cox. Both were aboard a 2014 Solaris Aviation Sling 2 during the crash. The identity of the aircraft’s pilot remains unconfirmed. Flight records indicate the plane took off from Zamperini Field in Torrance at 10:53 a.m. and was last spotted near Avalon at 11:13 a.m. There was no sign that the pilot intended to land at the island’s airport prior to the crash.
