On Wednesday evening, November 12, a bicyclist died in a crash on East Vernon Avenue in the South Park district of South Los Angeles after being hit by a fleeing motorcyclist. The Los Angeles Police Department received a call at approximately 7:25 p.m. Officers responded to the 700 block of East Vernon Avenue, located between Avalon Boulevard and McKinley Avenue, following reports of an individual lying in the street, as stated by Officer Charles Miller. Upon arrival, they discovered the bicyclist was unresponsive. The individual was declared deceased by paramedics belonging to the Los Angeles Fire Department at the location. Witnesses informed police that they observed a motorcycle departing the scene after the accident, but could not offer a description. The identity of the victim has not been disclosed yet, as the family needs to be notified first. LAPD detectives are looking into the crash and are asking anyone with details to step forward. Summary of the East Vernon Avenue accident. When a driver, or in this case, a motorcyclist, leaves the scene after causing injury or death, the Hit-and-Run Statute is relevant. This law requires that anyone involved in an accident must stop, share their identification, and offer appropriate assistance to those who are injured. Not complying is considered a felony that can lead to imprisonment. Since the victim was on a bicycle, the Bicycle Safety and Overtaking Law also applies.
