El Dorado County, CA (May 28, 2026) – A woman and a 5-year-old boy were killed when an SUV veered off Highway 50 and plunged into the American River. The deadly collision occurred at approximately 4 p.m. near Ice House Road on the river’s south bank amid rainy weather. According to the California Highway Patrol, the Hyundai SUV veered off the road on a curve with four people inside, slid down an embankment, and ended up partially submerged in the water close to the shore. Authorities have named the woman who perished at the scene as 35-year-old Maria Fife from Tracy. A young boy later died in a hospital. An 11-year-old boy sustained serious injuries, while a 41-year-old man from Tracy suffered only minor harm. Troopers indicated that driving too fast for the wet road conditions was likely a contributing factor, though alcohol was not involved. Investigators are continuing to examine the fatal crash and the roadway conditions at the time of the incident. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those killed in the accident.
