Walnut Creek, CA (May 3, 2026) – A fatal wrong-way collision on Interstate 680 near Walnut Creek killed one person and injured several others late Friday night in Contra Costa County. The California Highway Patrol reports that officers received calls around 11:20 p.m. A wrong-way driver heading south in the northbound lanes of I-680, just north of Highway 242. Within minutes, responding units came upon a major multi-vehicle crash near Treat Boulevard. Authorities report that the wrong-way driver in a Dodge Charger struck several vehicles, creating a chaotic and severe accident scene. One of the vehicles’ passengers was declared dead at the scene. Altogether, seven other people were hurt. Four people, including the driver who went the wrong way, received serious injuries, and three others had minor ones. One individual from the crash was reported as uninjured. Emergency responders took several victims to nearby hospitals for care. Investigators later found that the wrong-way driver was under the influence during the crash. She was taken into custody and is still hospitalized. The crash caused all northbound lanes of I-680 to close for several hours while officials investigated and cleared the area. The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident.
