Salinas, CA (May 29, 2026) – A 16-year-old girl from Soledad was killed Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash on River Road, just south of Parker Road near Chualar in Monterey County. The crash occurred at around 8:28 a.m. A 26-year-old man from King City was traveling north on River Road in a Toyota sedan with the teenager as his passenger, while a 47-year-old man from Soledad was heading south in a Mercedes-Benz coupe. For reasons that remain unclear, the Toyota veered across the solid double yellow lines into the southbound lane, where it was struck on the passenger side by the Mercedes. The teenager was declared dead at the scene. Both drivers sustained serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals. The girl’s name has not been released pending next-of-kin notification by the Monterey County Coroner’s Office. River Road was shut down in both directions between Parker Road and Odonata Winery for several hours before being reopened. Investigators are still working to determine why the Toyota crossed into oncoming traffic; additional information will be released as it becomes available. Authorities have stated that alcohol and drugs do not appear to have played a role in the collision. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the young girl who was killed. What Happens After a Fatal Head-On Crash on a Rural California Road? When a car veers into the opposite lane on a country two-lane highway, the outcome is typically catastrophic. Head-on and side-impact crashes at highway speeds offer almost no room for error for occupants in either vehicle. In California, when a deadly crash happens, the coroner’s office joins the investigation. It is responsible for officially identifying the victim and notifying the family before the person’s name is made public. Investigators usually examine road markings, the positions of the vehicles, and any witness statements to determine why a car crossed the centerline. When substances like drugs and alcohol are excluded at the outset, other elements—such as driver fatigue, a medical episode, or an unexpected road obstacle—may then be considered in the investigation.
