San Jose, CA (April 22, 2026) – A 1-year-old boy passed away Tuesday afternoon, April 21, following a collision with a vehicle in the parking lot of an apartment complex on the 2100 block of Canoas Garden Avenue. Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 4:23 p.m. after reports of a crash involving a pedestrian. Early reports indicate that Olivier Carmelo Sgarlata, the child involved, was walking in a parking lot when he was struck by a man in a minivan. The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The driver stayed at the scene and worked with the investigators. Officials have indicated that alcohol or drugs do not appear to have played a role in the incident. The investigation into the crash’s cause is ongoing, with additional information to be shared once it is available. We extend our sympathies to the victim’s family. Why Crashes in Parking Lots Pose Dangers to Young Children. Residential complex parking areas frequently feature a combination of moving vehicles and pedestrians in confined spaces. Drivers might be concentrating on parking or pulling out, reducing their capacity to spot small children close by. Young children face heightened danger due to their short stature and erratic behavior.
