San Jose, CA (March 6, 2026) – A 63-year-old San Jose woman died after a vehicle struck her early Friday, March 6, on the northbound I-680 offramp at Alum Rock Ave in Santa Clara County. Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 12:29 a.m. following reports of a pedestrian collision on the offramp to Alum Rock Ave. Upon arrival, responders discovered the woman on the road suffering severe injuries, believed to be from a vehicle collision. She was transported to a nearby hospital for care, where she was subsequently pronounced dead. Officials stated that the driver fled the scene, and the case is being handled as a hit-and-run. Authorities are still probing the reason for the accident, with additional information to be shared once available. We offer our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased. Why Pedestrian Accidents Occasionally Happen Near Highway Exits. Pedestrians face distinct hazards on highway off-ramps since vehicles are typically shifting from high-speed driving to urban roads. Drivers leaving highways might concentrate on merging vehicles or changing signals, potentially slowing their reaction time if someone is in the road. Visibility can also be impaired by lighting conditions at night. Areas around ramps may have poorer lighting than urban intersections, which can make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians until they’re very near. Road design can also affect safety in these spots.
