San Bernardino County, CA (May 15, 2026) – A pedestrian was fatally struck on westbound I-10 near Cedar Avenue in San Bernardino County on Thursday, May 14, in a crash that closed all freeway lanes and left a second person injured. The incident occurred around 8:38 p.m. when a dark-colored SUV hit the pedestrian while they were crossing multiple lanes of the westbound freeway. A Honda Civic was also part of the collision. The driver of the Honda Civic was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for medical treatment. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where all lanes were closed near the Cedar Avenue overpass. Responders remained at the scene for nearly two hours until the roadway was fully reopened around 10:28 PM. Tragically, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at 9:05 PM. A tow company was requested to remove the Honda Civic for evidence, while the dark-colored SUV involved in the fatal collision has not been described further in the available reports. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, and additional information will be released as it becomes available. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
Why Are Pedestrians on California Freeways at Such High Risk? Pedestrians on California freeways are in extreme danger because of the high speeds of passing vehicles and the near-complete absence of lighting on many rural and suburban sections. Freeways, unlike city streets, aren’t built for pedestrians, and motorists usually have almost no time to respond if a person suddenly steps onto the road. At night, the danger rises dramatically since pedestrians become far more difficult to spot—particularly when crossing several lanes. San Bernardino County’s major freeway corridors, such as I-10, experience heavy traffic around the clock. When a pedestrian ventures onto a freeway—whether because of a car breakdown, a mental health emergency, or other reasons—the chances of a deadly outcome are dramatically higher than they would be on ordinary surface streets.
