Madera, CA (May 23, 2026) – A man died and a woman was injured after a two-vehicle crash on Thursday in Madera County. Authorities say the collision occurred at the intersection of Avenue 21 and Road 28 1/2. A woman driving a Jeep was heading west on Avenue 21 when a white Ford Escape traveling south on Road 28 1/2 approached the intersection. Investigators determined that the Ford driver ran a stop sign, causing the two vehicles to collide. The Ford then crashed into a tree, throwing the 18-year-old driver from the vehicle. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The woman driving the Jeep was transported to a hospital with moderate to serious injuries. No names have been made public in the wake of the crash. Investigators do not think alcohol played a role in the accident, but they are still working to determine the exact cause. Our thoughts are with the young man’s family and friends as they grieve this loss. Why Rural Intersections Can Be Dangerous for Drivers. Rural crossroads often pose unique driving hazards compared to those encountered in big urban areas. Many county roads feature limited lighting, fewer traffic signals, and long stretches where drivers may not anticipate cross traffic. Certain intersections use two-way stops rather than four-way controls, which can raise the chance of vehicles entering at inappropriate times. Visibility can also become an issue on rural roads.
