(Oceanside, CA) At least one person died Saturday afternoon, January 17, following a collision between a flatbed tow truck and a sedan on Interstate 5 in a San Diego Freeway crash. The California Highway Patrol stated officers arrived around 3:36 p.m. to the northbound San Diego Freeway (5). Upon arrival, first responders discovered a flatbed tow truck and a sedan halted near the center divider, both sustaining severe damage. CHP confirmed one fatality at the scene. Officials withheld the victim’s name, age, and gender. No other injuries were reported by officers, and officials noted that paramedics did not take anyone else to a hospital. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office was alerted and arrived at the scene. Investigators did not immediately disclose information regarding the cause of the collision or which vehicle hit the other. The CHP did not indicate if speed, lane changes, or mechanical problems contributed to the crash. The crash led to significant traffic backups on northbound Interstate 5. California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert at 3:02 p.m.
