Long Beach, CA (February 20, 2026) – The Long Beach Police Department reported that a 39-year-old man was fatally struck in a crash on Pacific Coast Highway just east of the Los Angeles River, near Maine Avenue, on the night of February 18. The incident took place around 9:30 p.m. A 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling eastbound on PCH struck the pedestrian, who was crossing the road outside a marked crosswalk. Emergency responders arrived promptly but declared the man dead at the scene. The SUV driver stayed at the location and cooperated fully with investigators. Officials stated that speed, impairment, and distraction do not appear to be factors in the collision. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, with additional details to be released when available. We extend our sympathies to the victim’s family and friends. Why Crossing Outside Marked Crosswalks Is Particularly Dangerous at Night. Pedestrian collisions occurring outside marked crosswalks tend to be more severe, particularly at night when visibility is reduced. On busy roads like Pacific Coast Highway, drivers might not anticipate someone crossing mid-block, leaving them scant time to react. Urban corridors near rivers and intersections often have poor lighting, hindering visibility for both pedestrians and drivers. In deadly accidents such as this, the location and time of day are frequently major contributing factors. Safety advocates urge pedestrians to utilize designated crosswalks whenever feasible and to don reflective or visible attire when walking after dark.
