Lakehead, CA (February 20, 2026) – A fatal multi-vehicle collision involving as many as 17 semis and passenger cars took place Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 5 near Gilman Rd, during intense winter weather in northern Shasta County. The California Highway Patrol reported the incident at 3:05 p.m. The incident occurred in the southbound lanes of I-5, leading to a complete closure between Salt Creek Rd and Gilman Rd. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and stayed for several hours owing to the incident’s size and complexity. Officials confirmed that one fatality—a 49-year-old man from Monterey Park driving a 2025 Toyota—resulted from the crash. No additional injuries have been officially confirmed at this time, although several vehicles sustained damage in the chain-reaction crash. Southbound I-5 stayed closed through the evening while crews removed debris and examined the site. Officials are still probing the cause of the incident, with further information to be shared as it emerges. We extend our sympathies to the victim’s family… Why Winter Weather Can Cause Major Pileups on I-5 in Shasta County. Interstate 5 in Shasta County serves as a key corridor for freight and passenger travel, experiencing heavy traffic volumes, particularly around Lakehead and other mountainous regions. During winter, snow accumulation and icy roads can greatly diminish traction and visibility, complicating drivers’ ability—particularly those operating large commercial trucks—to evade abrupt hazards. Multi-vehicle crashes frequently start with one vehicle losing control, rapidly worsening as trailing drivers lack sufficient time or distance to respond. On roads like Gilman Rd, steep downhill slopes and tight curves can also shorten stopping distances. Caltrans and CHP routinely track weather and release chain control alerts, yet rapidly intensifying storms can surpass these warnings. These severe, high-consequence collisions emphasize the importance of reduced speeds and increased following distances in adverse weather conditions.
