Oakland, CA (May 27, 2026) – Multiple vehicles were involved in a hit-and-run crash that left people injured Wednesday morning on Interstate 880 in Oakland. The accident occurred on southbound I-880 near the 29th Avenue exit, just north of Fruitvale. According to dispatch logs, the crash first appeared to involve a blue Kia SUV, but later updates indicated that four vehicles were blocking unknown lanes of traffic. Witnesses reported multiple vehicles at the scene, including a gray Mercedes-Benz C-Class, a white truck, and two SUVs. Officials later reclassified the incident from a hit-and-run with no injuries to a hit-and-run involving injuries. Emergency responders were dispatched to the freeway after reports of vehicles stopped in the two right lanes near the Fruitvale and High Street area. No further information has been released about the suspect vehicle or the circumstances that caused the collision. Investigators are still collecting evidence from the crash scene. Our thoughts are with those impacted, and we hope for their full recovery.
Why Multi-Vehicle Freeway Hit-and-Run Crashes Can Be Difficult to Investigate. Hit-and-run incidents involving several vehicles on congested freeways can make investigations more difficult, as traffic conditions shift quickly following the first collision. Drivers might relocate damaged vehicles, witnesses can get separated by traffic, and debris can scatter across several lanes prior to investigators’ arrival. Heavily congested freeways like Interstate 880 also raise the risk of secondary collisions when vehicles brake or stop abruptly. Investigators examine traffic camera videos, patterns of vehicle damage, and eyewitness accounts to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine which vehicle fled the scene. Lane obstructions can additionally hinder emergency vehicles and lead to extended traffic congestion while investigations are underway.
