Gilroy, CA (April 14, 2026) – Two individuals were fatally injured and one was left in critical condition early Tuesday morning, April 14, when a stolen vehicle overturned in Gilroy after a police chase. The pursuit started as officers from multiple agencies tried to stop the stolen car that had been sighted. Reports indicate the driver refused to comply, sparking a chase that passed through multiple areas, including Monterey Rd. During the incident, the vehicle hit a tree and a large dumpster near officers before fleeing further. It subsequently ran a red light at Monterey Rd and Leavesley Rd, after which officers lost sight of it. The vehicle was later found overturned following a crash into a center median and a light pole near Monterey Rd and 1st St. Three occupants were ejected from the vehicle due to the impact’s force. Emergency responders confirmed that two people were pronounced dead at the scene. A third individual was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. Officials are still investigating the crash, with additional information to be shared as it emerges. We offer our deepest sympathies to the families of those who perished. How High-Speed Chases Can Result in Devastating Multi-Vehicle Fatalities. Police chases with stolen cars frequently feature high speeds and abrupt maneuvers. These conditions can diminish control and heighten the risk of losing traction, particularly when drivers run red lights or execute sudden maneuvers. When a vehicle collides with stationary objects like poles or medians, the force of impact may eject occupants, especially if they are not properly secured. Being ejected greatly raises the risk of deadly injuries. Pursuit-related crashes can feature several collisions in a brief span.
