Santa Maria, CA (March 14, 2026) – A vehicle struck a 1-year-old child and the child’s mother while they were crossing the street in Santa Maria, killing the toddler and leaving the mother in critical condition. The crash happened just before 3 p.m. On Friday, March 13, at the intersection of N Broadway and Fesler St., authorities reported that a 30-year-old mother was pushing her young child in a stroller along the west side when a vehicle turning right from Fesler St. onto Broadway hit them. Police, fire, and ambulance crews responded to the scene. The mother and child were both transported to Marian Regional Medical Center. The child later succumbed to injuries from the crash, while the mother is still in critical condition. Officials are ongoing with their investigation into the crash’s cause, and additional details will be shared as they emerge. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased. Understanding Pedestrian Safety at Intersections. Pedestrian accidents are especially common at intersections, above all when people cross amid turning vehicles. Even when drivers halt for traffic in one direction, turning vehicles may hit pedestrians in crosswalks if they lose focus. Strollers offer scant protection for children during a crash. The impact force can pass straight to the passenger inside, rendering crashes particularly hazardous for young children. Investigators frequently analyze traffic flows, signal timings, and driver actions to determine how these collisions happen.
