San Diego, CA (March 11, 2026) – A man sustained life-threatening injuries when hit by a school bus Tuesday morning, March 10, in San Diego’s Rancho Peñasquitos neighborhood. Emergency responders arrived around 8:30 a.m. Responding to reports of a pedestrian crash at the intersection of Paseo Montalban and Via Cima Bella. Rescuers found 69-year-old Rene Steiner, who was walking his dogs when struck by a school bus driven by a Poway Unified School District employee. Authorities noted the bus was operated by a 76-year-old man and carried no students during the incident. A nearby officer initiated lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived and transported Steiner to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for care. Officials stated that Steiner sustained serious injuries, such as a skull fracture, several broken ribs, and internal chest trauma. Neither his dogs nor the bus driver were injured. Officials are still probing the reason for the accident. We envision the injured man as he gets medical treatment. Pedestrian Safety in Residential Neighborhoods. Residential streets may seem tranquil, yet they experience regular vehicle traffic each day, such as buses and service vehicles. Pedestrians crossing or traveling on neighborhood streets may encounter hazards if they and drivers reach intersections at the same time. School buses often pass through residential areas in the mornings, even without students aboard.
