What Factors Affect Pedestrian Safety at High-Traffic Crossings. Pedestrian accidents frequently occur at intersections because of the combination of turning vehicles and pedestrian traffic. Drivers might be concentrating on traffic signals or other cars, which can make it more difficult to spot a pedestrian crossing the road. Pedestrians are also at risk when crossing outside designated areas or amid changing signals. Vehicle speed significantly influences the severity of any collision. Driving at lower speeds allows drivers more time to react and lessens the severity of a collision’s impact.
