Patterson, CA (May 2, 2026) – A semi-truck crash involving a rollover closed Interstate 5 in both directions Friday morning near Patterson. The incident took place just before 10:00 a.m. Just north of Sperry Avenue, emergency units arrived at the scene and discovered the overturned truck lying on its side in the median. Investigators stated that the driver turned left for reasons unknown, entered the median, then tried to regain control, which caused the truck to overturn. A 43-year-old man from Bakersfield, who was in the truck’s sleeper area, sustained major injuries. He was airlifted to a hospital by helicopter. The 58-year-old driver from Fillmore suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital. The truck was carrying refrigerated liquid hydrogen, and reports of a gas smell prompted a complete shutdown of the interstate in both directions. Around 1:30 p.m., crews secured the scene before reopening the southbound lanes. The northbound lanes were reopened later in the afternoon. Officials are still investigating the cause of the crash, with additional details to be shared as they emerge.
