Chula Vista, CA (March 30, 2026) – Two individuals were killed early Sunday morning, March 29, when a vehicle plunged off a bridge into the Sweetwater River in Chula Vista. The crash happened just before 1:00 a.m. At the interchange linking westbound State Route 54 to southbound Interstate 5, reports indicate a Jeep lost control while traveling through, veered off the roadway, and plunged over the bridge. Eyewitnesses observed sparks just before the vehicle plunged into the water underneath. Emergency services arrived at the scene and attempted to rescue the occupants. Despite these efforts, both the driver and a passenger were declared dead on site. The identities of those involved have not been disclosed. The crash involved no other vehicles. The interchange was shut down for several hours after the incident and reopened around 7:30 a.m. Officials are still probing the reason behind the accident.
