Calabasas, CA (February 25, 2026) – A pedestrian lost their life in a crash involving a big rig early Monday, February 23, along the eastbound Ventura Freeway near Lost Hills Rd.. Emergency units were called to the scene around 5:57 a.m. after reports of a person struck on the roadway. The collision occurred just west of Lost Hills Rd in the Calabasas–Agoura Hills area. Responders arrived quickly, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.. Authorities temporarily shut down all eastbound lanes of US-101 following the crash. One lane reopened around 6:45 a.m., allowing limited traffic to pass through the area. The closure caused delays that stretched back to Chesebro Rd as morning traffic increased.. The identity of the victim has not yet been released. Officials have not confirmed what led up to the incident or why the pedestrian was on the freeway at the time.. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.. Why Freeway Pedestrian Crashes in California Can Be Especially Dangerous. Pedestrian crashes on highways often result in severe outcomes due to high vehicle speeds and limited visibility. Unlike city streets, freeways are not designed for foot traffic, and drivers may have little time to react when someone is in the roadway.. Early morning hours can add another layer of risk. Reduced lighting and driver fatigue may affect reaction times, especially during busy commute periods. Even with headlights, spotting a person on a freeway can be difficult until it is too late.. Barriers, wide lanes, and fast-moving traffic also make it harder for pedestrians to reach safety once they are on the roadway. These factors combine to increase the likelihood of serious or fatal injuries in such incidents.
