Willows, CA (March 21, 2026) – A UTV rider died in a crash on County Road 20 east of I-5 in Willows. The incident took place on Friday, March 20. The California Highway Patrol reports that 18-year-old Mattie Gunther from Orland was driving eastbound in a Toyota sedan when it collided with a Kawasaki utility terrain vehicle (UTV). The Kawasaki rider was thrown from the UTV and sustained fatal injuries. Emergency services arrived at the scene, but the rider was declared dead. Gunther stayed at the scene and worked with the authorities. Officials are still probing the cause of the crash, with additional details to be shared as they emerge. We offer our heartfelt sympathies to the family of the deceased. Why UTV Accidents Can Be Especially Hazardous. UTVs, being smaller and less stable than typical cars, leave riders particularly susceptible in crashes. Ejections frequently occur in crashes, even at moderate speeds, owing to the vehicles’ limited protective features and open configuration. Collisions with bigger vehicles like sedans or trucks commonly lead to serious injuries or deaths because of disparities in size and mass. Using seat belts or helmets can lower injury risks, but UTV riders are still far more vulnerable than car passengers. Crashes can occur rapidly on roadways or driveways not built for UTVs, and even short impacts can lead to severe outcomes.
