Walnut Creek, CA (May 17, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 680 near Treat Boulevard left people injured and caused significant traffic delays on the freeway early Sunday morning. The incident was reported around 11:49 p.m. and included multiple vehicles in the southbound lanes. First responders arrived to find wreckage scattered across every lane, with several drivers trapped in their cars after the collision. Emergency crews worked to extricate people from the separate vehicles while traffic came to a complete standstill in the area. At least four individuals sustained injuries in the crash, with two of them being taken to a nearby hospital for additional medical care. Authorities have withheld information on the extent of the injuries. The highway stayed shut for over an hour as crews removed wreckage and aided those at the scene. Normal traffic resumed after the area was secured, about two hours later. Authorities are still looking into what caused the collision. We hope those who were hurt experience a quick and complete recovery. What Makes Multi-Vehicle Freeway Crashes More Complex to Handle? Multi-vehicle freeway crashes typically feature widespread debris and several impact sites, which complicates scene management for emergency responders.
