What Typically Happens When a Vehicle Catches Fire After a Crash in California? Vehicle fires following a crash are uncommon, but they can occur if fuel lines, batteries, or other flammable parts are damaged or exposed to intense heat from the collision. Multi-vehicle collisions heighten the danger, as repeated impacts from different angles tend to inflict more extensive harm on a vehicle’s underbody and engine bay. Fire spreading between vehicles is also a risk at busy intersections, where cars often end up close together after a collision. In California, fire crews routinely respond alongside traffic units to any crash reported to involve fire or the potential for fire. Their main priority is to control the fire, stop it from spreading, and assist any people who might still be trapped inside.
