(Desert Palms, CA) A 38-year-old man from Thermal was taken into custody early on Friday, October 10, on charges of driving under the influence following a two-vehicle accident that involved a California Highway Patrol vehicle on a Washington Street ramp. The incident happened just before 1 a.m. According to the California Highway Patrol, this is located on the westbound off-ramp of Interstate 10 at Washington Street close to Varner Road. Two officers in a Dodge Charger patrol car were leaving the ramp. At that time, a 2024 Toyota Corolla approached the ramp in the opposite direction, colliding with the front of the patrol vehicle. Both cars suffered considerable damage to their front ends. Paramedics took Jose Huitron-Rueda, the driver of the Corolla, along with two CHP officers, to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, all suffering from significant injuries. Officers subsequently took Rueda into custody for suspected DUI, as reported by CHP Officer Rafael Espinosa. A SigAlert was activated for the off-ramp and stayed in place until just before 10 a.m. The incident is still being investigated, and those who have any information are encouraged to reach out to the Indio CHP office by calling 760-772-5300.
