(Beaumont, CA) Two drivers were hurt Sunday afternoon, February 43183, when a rear-end crash caused a vehicle fire on a crowded section of Highway 79. California Highway Patrol officers reported the two-car collision happened around 12:15 p.m. Near County Landfill Road on northbound Highway 79. Officers arrived and discovered both vehicles halted in the No. 2 lane of the four-lane highway. Riverside County Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene minutes later and observed flames emanating from the engine compartment of one of the vehicles. Firefighters responded swiftly and extinguished the fire shortly afterward. Both drivers got out of their vehicles before the fire could spread. Paramedics checked both motorists on site. One driver received moderate injuries, while the other experienced minor injuries. Both patients were taken by ambulances to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley for treatment. Officials withheld the drivers’ names, ages, and genders. After the crash, the CHP shut down at least one northbound lane of Highway 79, enabling emergency personnel to operate safely and clear the wrecked vehicles.
