Following a serious multi-vehicle highway collision, investigators typically start by examining the locations of the vehicles, road surface markings, and traffic movement patterns. Factors such as weather, visibility, and braking distance can also be analyzed to gain a clearer picture of how traffic conditions evolved prior to the vehicles colliding. Commercial trucks often draw extra scrutiny because of their heavy weight, longer stopping distances, and higher speeds on congested highways. Phone records, dashcam footage, and eyewitness accounts can also help reconstruct the sequence of events.
