East Los Angeles, CA (May 23, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash involving a semitruck blocked several southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Indiana Street early Saturday morning in the Boyle Heights area of East Los Angeles. The collision occurred just after 3 a.m. , per published accounts. A massive blaze engulfed the semi-truck after the collision on the highway. Emergency crews battled the blaze as the road closure caused traffic to back up for miles. Paramedics were called to the scene, but the number and severity of any injuries remained unconfirmed as of Saturday. A SigAlert stayed active for multiple hours as crews worked to remove the wrecked vehicles from the roadway. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident. We wish a speedy recovery to everyone impacted by this morning’s highway blaze. Why Semi-Truck Fires Often Cause Major Highway Traffic Jams. Major truck fires on busy highways typically cause prolonged lane closures due to the large size of the vehicles and the extensive cleanup needed afterward. Fuel spills, burning cargo, and ruined road surfaces can continue to paralyze traffic long after the fire itself has been put out. Motorists stuck in these delays often encounter abrupt slowing, smoke that cuts visibility, and constricted lanes around ongoing cleanup work.
