San Diego has intersections that repeatedly show high crash rates. Being aware of where they are and what makes them dangerous can help drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists stay safer.
Why These Intersections Were Chosen
These crossings were selected because they have a history of frequent accidents and lack some of the safety features needed to reduce risk. Safety improvements like better lighting, clearer crosswalks, audible signals, and countdown timers are often missing. In many cases local safety groups pushed for updates but not all intersections have been upgraded yet.
List of High-Risk Intersections
Here are fifteen intersections in San Diego repeatedly identified as particularly dangerous:
- University Avenue & 52nd Street in City Heights
- 6th Avenue & Broadway in Downtown
- El Cajon Boulevard & 36th Street in North Park
- 4th Avenue & B Street in Downtown
- Coronado Avenue & Thermal Avenue in Nestor/Egger Highlands
- 5th Avenue & B Street in Downtown
- Euclid Avenue & Naranja Street in Encanto
- Broadway & 5th Avenue in Downtown
- 10th Avenue & A Street in Downtown
- 4th Avenue & Market Street in Downtown
- Front Street & Ash Street in Downtown
- University Avenue & 4th Avenue in Hillcrest
- 11th Avenue & Broadway in Downtown
- Market Street & 6th Avenue in Downtown
- El Cajon Boulevard & 33rd Street in Normal Heights
Types of Hazards Found There
These intersections often suffer from multiple safety issues:
- Crosswalks that are hard to see or poorly marked
- Traffic lights with short signal duration or unresponsive timing for pedestrians
- Poor lighting at night or obscured sightlines making it hard for drivers or pedestrians to see clearly
- Lack of audible or visual cues for pedestrians who need more time
What Has Been Done and What Still Needs to Happen
Some intersections have already been improved. Enhancements include installing pedestrian countdown timers, upgrading the visibility of crosswalks, and making crossing signals louder. The city has adopted these changes under initiatives aimed at reducing traffic fatalities. Even so many dangerous crossings remain, and proposals exist to tackle hundreds more.
What This Means for You
If you travel through these intersections or any busy crossings it helps to be extra cautious. Slow down, stay alert for pedestrians, avoid distractions, and assume others may not see you.
If you are injured in a crash at any intersection and someone else’s negligence played a role it is important to document everything. Photographs, witness statements, and medical records are essential. Consulting with a car accident attorney will help you understand your rights and options including seeking compensation for injuries, medical costs, lost income, and other damages.
