(Mesa, AZ) A fiery crash on Loop 202 early Saturday, December 27, claimed three lives after two vehicles burst into flames on the eastbound Red Mountain Freeway near McDowell Road. The incident occurred just after 2:30 a.m. First responders arrived and discovered a 2019 Kia Sorento and a 2003 Toyota Matrix completely on fire in the HOV lane. After firefighters put out the fire, they discovered three deceased individuals inside the charred vehicles. The Department of Public Safety reported that the fire’s severity prevented immediate identification of either the victims or the vehicles. Investigators think one of the vehicles was driving the wrong way before the collision. Officials shut down the freeway for a few hours prior to reopening it. Overview of the Loop 202 Fiery Crash. Investigators use the Improper Lane Change Law when they suspect a wrong-way driver. This law limits the locations and methods by which drivers can access controlled-access highways. In the Loop 202 fiery crash, DPS will investigate ramp access points, tire tracks, witness statements, and roadway surveillance to figure out how one vehicle entered the freeway going the wrong way. Since excess speed can worsen the impact of wrong-way and head-on crashes, analysts might also consider the Reasonable and Prudent Speed Law.
