Why Seatbelt Use Is Examined After Fatal Crashes. Following major accidents, safety investigators frequently check if seatbelts were worn during the crash. Seatbelts are intended to hold occupants firmly in their seats during sudden collisions. In a crash, when a vehicle halts suddenly, the body keeps moving forward because of inertia. A seatbelt spreads impact forces over the body’s stronger areas and stops a person from hitting the dashboard, windshield, or other interior parts. Seatbelts also lower the risk of ejection from the vehicle.
