San Luis Obispo County, CA (May 12, 2026) – A single-vehicle crash in an unincorporated area of northern San Luis Obispo County left one man dead and two others injured Sunday evening. Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 7:19 p.m. Following reports of a crash involving a Chevrolet Camaro, traffic is being diverted to Nacimiento Lake Dr near Frazier Rd. Officials reported that 44-year-old Joseph Mitchell Pate was traveling westbound at an undetermined speed when his vehicle suddenly departed the roadway for reasons that have not yet been established. The car reportedly drifted off the north side of the road, after which the driver attempted to correct course and oversteered. The car then veered across both lanes and collided with a tree on the south side of the road. A 48-year-old man in the back seat was declared dead at the scene. The front-seat passenger, 41-year-old Mack Garcia, sustained only minor injuries. Pate suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he was also arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The deceased passenger’s name will be released once their family has been notified. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash, and additional information will be provided as it becomes available. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased.
What Investigators Typically Examine After a Single-Vehicle Crash. Investigators frequently need to reconstruct a vehicle’s path and motion in the period leading up to impact in single-vehicle crashes. This may involve analyzing the road configuration, skid marks, and the vehicle’s final position. Speed is another critical element often assessed, as are steering maneuvers that could suggest oversteering or loss of control.
