Multi-vehicle crashes on busy highways like I-5 often happen when traffic slows suddenly. Drivers traveling at highway speeds may not have enough time to react, especially when multiple lanes are involved. This can lead to chain-reaction collisions involving several vehicles.. In areas like San Diego County, a mix of passenger cars and large trucks increases the risk. Larger vehicles require more distance to stop and can cause more severe impacts during a crash. When several lanes are blocked, drivers may attempt quick lane changes, which can add to the danger.. Weather, road conditions, and visibility can also affect how quickly drivers respond. Even in clear conditions, heavy traffic alone can create situations where a single mistake leads to a larger crash involving many vehicles.
