What Typically Happens After a Police Pursuit Ends in a Crash in Sacramento? In California, the aftermath of a police chase that results in a crash tends to follow a fairly predictable pattern. Officers at the scene secure the perimeter, assist the injured, and start recording details of the collision. A separate inquiry into the chase is usually launched to assess whether officers adhered to departmental policies during the pursuit. Under California law, police have the legal right to chase individuals who evade a lawful stop, though departments must also evaluate potential risks to public safety throughout any pursuit.
