Riverside, CA (April 14, 2026) – A train and vehicle collided early Sunday morning, April 12, near the 12th Street and Howard Avenue intersection in Riverside. Following the crash, two individuals were transported to a nearby hospital for medical assessment. Initial reports indicate that both individuals had reportedly gotten out of the vehicle before the train struck it. Emergency services arrived at the scene to aid those involved. It is still unclear how the vehicle ended up on the tracks. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. Our thoughts are with those impacted as they recover. What Happens When a Train Strikes a Vehicle in California? Collisions between trains and vehicles at railroad crossings rank among the most serious road accidents. In California, these crossings are governed by regulations requiring warning systems like flashing lights, bells, and crossing gates to notify drivers of an approaching train. If a vehicle stops or stalls on the tracks, the consequences can be severe even at low train speeds due to the enormous weight disparity between a train and a passenger car. Survivors of such collisions frequently emphasize that the safest action, when a train is approaching and the vehicle can’t be moved, is to exit the vehicle right away and get away from the tracks.
