How Vehicle Fires Can Start After Crashes in California. Vehicle fires can occur when a crash damages fuel systems or electrical components. Even a single impact can create sparks or leaks that lead to flames.. When multiple vehicles are involved, the risk of fire can increase. Parked cars may also catch fire if a moving vehicle hits them with enough force. Dry vegetation near roadways can add another layer of risk. If flames spread beyond the vehicles, nearby grass or brush may ignite quickly.. Road closures are often necessary after these incidents to allow crews to control the fire and clear damaged vehicles. Once the area is safe, traffic can resume as cleanup is completed.
