Rancho Cordova, CA (April 16, 2026) – A fatal crash on Thursday between a light rail train and a vehicle in Rancho Cordova left one person dead and two injured. The incident took place at the Folsom Blvd and Mills Park Dr. intersection. According to reports, the vehicle bypassed the crossing arms and drove into the train’s path, causing the collision. Emergency responders arrived and took all three vehicle occupants to the hospital. One of the people later died from his injuries, while the other two were reported as injured. No injuries were reported among the train’s passengers. The reason the driver bypassed the crossing arms is still unknown. No further information about the victims has been disclosed yet. Officials are still probing the cause of the crash, with additional details to be shared once available. Our thoughts are with those impacted as they keep recovering. Why Train Crossing Signals Are Crucial at Road Intersections. Railroad crossings feature warning systems like flashing lights and crossing gates to notify drivers of an approaching train. These signals are intended to give vehicles sufficient time to stop safely before a train arrives at the intersection. Trains need much greater stopping distances than cars, making it hard to prevent a collision once a vehicle is on the tracks. Even at low speeds, a train’s size and weight can result in serious consequences during a collision. Driver attentiveness and patience at crossings can help minimize the risk.
