(Los Angeles, CA) Among the multiple fatalities in a Slauson Avenue crash on Thursday afternoon, February 19, was a pregnant woman and her unborn child, after a speeding vehicle ran a red light and sparked a fiery chain-reaction wreck. The California Highway Patrol reported the incident happened around 1:30 p.m. A gray Mercedes traveling southbound on La Brea Avenue sped into the intersection at Slauson Avenue. According to witnesses, the driver went through a red light prior to colliding with multiple vehicles. The collision ignited a fierce blaze that rapidly spread to several cars close to a gas station. Emergency personnel reached the scene in just minutes, discovering multiple vehicles ablaze with people trapped within. Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate the victims. Officials first reported several deaths at the scene, with the fatality count increasing as searchers examined the wrecked vehicles. The California Highway Patrol verified that a pregnant woman and her unborn baby were among the victims. Multiple other victims were taken to local hospitals, including at least one patient airlifted to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in critical condition. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the fatalities or those hurt. CHP spokesperson Franco Pepi stated that investigators are examining traffic camera recordings and eyewitness videos to assess the vehicle’s speed and the precise order of events.
