El Cajon, CA (May 25, 2026) – At least one person was killed Monday morning after a vehicle veered off Interstate 8 and burst into flames in El Cajon. The crash was reported around 3:28 a.m. on the westbound side of Interstate 8, just east of Mollison Avenue. The California Highway Patrol reported that a vehicle swerved off the freeway and crashed. The individual who alerted authorities said they heard a loud explosion and observed flames. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office was summoned to the scene. According to the CHP’s online log, two people and a dog were inside the vehicle at the time. The incident is still under investigation as authorities collect more details. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased. Why Fiery Freeway Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous. Fast-moving highway collisions can generate deadly hazards in mere moments. A vehicle departing the roadway might collide with barriers, signs, trees, or other stationary objects prior to coming to a halt. If a fire starts from fuel, electrical systems, or engine parts, the resulting flames and smoke can hinder escape for those inside the vehicle. Crashes occurring in the early morning hours can also be harder for other motorists to spot, particularly on dimly lit sections of highway.
