A solo occupant was involved in a vehicle collision with a bear on northbound State Route 96 near Weitchpec in Humboldt County on Sept. 14, 2026. The crash was reported at approximately 9:54 p.m.
The incident occurred along a stretch of SR 96 northbound near Weitchpec. California Highway Patrol classified the call as a traffic collision with an ambulance en route.
A later CHP update, recorded at about 10:41 p.m., indicated that the vehicle was being recovered or retrieved from the scene. The dispatch did not provide a confirmed injury status for the vehicle occupant.
The available CHP information identified only one occupant and did not list additional vehicles as involved. No further details about the bear or the condition of the vehicle were provided.
